Ventoux area (8.5/10)
There are few better cycling areas in Europe than the Ventoux (30 minutes NE of Avignon.) Though just north of the Luberon, the Ventoux area is more spread out and so affords a greater variety of cycling loops. The Ventoux area is also less touristed and less crowded than the Luberon, making for, we think, a more authentic low-key experience. Nonetheless there are a great number of excellent restaurants, both fancy and family run, as well as artisans and winemakers.
Taking its name from the famous Mont Ventoux, one of cycling's best known bucket list items is literally at your doorstep. In short, there is something – indeed there is much – for everyone in the Ventoux area. |

Route Variety 8/10
There is a very good network of small paved roads in this area just North East of Avignon. Most important, there are third and fourth level paved roads avoid the more highly trafficked routes completely and allow easy circulation without encountering cars or trucks. |
Hills: 9/10 and 6/10
The Ventoux area (just northeast of Avignon and surrounding the base of the Mt. Ventoux) has among the best cycling in Provence and will appeal to both Col Baggers and flatlanders. Casual riders will find a good variety of 30-40 mile routes over rolling hills on quiet back roads and which avoid big climbs. Nonetheless, everyone should try the Gorge de la Nesque which climbs so gently that anyone can manage it. Strong cyclists, however, will be in their element. Not only is the Mt. Ventoux at your doorstep but so are several other well-known hill routes to the south and north. |
Cycling Safety 8/10
There is a dense network of 2nd, 3rd and 4th level roads in this area which allow cyclists to almost completely avoid any main or even secondary roads. This is a BIG cycling area and so motorists are aware of cyclists and will leave you ample space. |
Non-cycling Interest: 9/10
The Ventoux region has always been one of our most popular for general interest touring. There is an excellent mix of markets, wineries, good restaurants, and historic sites as well as major centers such as Avignon, Carpentras and Vaison la Romaine. This is the best wine area in Provence centered around Chateauneuf du Pape. |
